Poor Clares - In Connemara lyrics
In Connemara, as I went walking one day, I sat on the rocks and I watched the young girls at their play; But they spoke in a tongue - 'Twas all so strange onto me. For 'twas Gaelic they spoke As they laughed and played by the sea. Ah, but who's going to to hear them And who's going to tell them "well done." And who will rejoice in the Gaelic as our native tongue? So beware little girls, You're the only white sheep in the fold; And the language of England may be yours before you're too old. Oh they tell us forgive and forget, That time is long gone. Most of Ireland is ours now - Most Englishmen in their own home. But its hard to forget When those pretty voices I hear Speak the language of Erin that's all so strange to my ear. In Connemara as I went walking one day, I sat on the rocks and I watched the young girls at their play; But they spoke in a tongue - 'Twas all so strange onto me. For 'twas Gaelic they spoke As they laughed and played by the sea. |
